Requirements for Virtual Machines

In order to install R1Soft on a virtual machine you’ll need a minimum of 512 MB memory available. If you’re running Linux, the kernel must be 2.6.9 to 3.11.x. The following Linux distributions are supported for 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64):

RedHat Enterprise
CentOS
Enterprise Linux
Ubuntu
Fedora
Debian
Novell SUSE Enterprise
Open SUSE
Mandriva
Cloud Linux
Virtuozzo
OpenVZ

For a comprehensive list of Linux system requirements, please check out R1Soft’s official system requirements listed here:

http://wiki.r1soft.com/display/ServerBackup/System+Requirements+-+Backup+Agent+for+Linux

  1. Different virtualizations require different installations (i.e. on the host or in the guest). Please see the chart below for additional information:
Virtualization Host Install Guest Install
MS Hyper-V Yes — Protects all VMs with one install using MS Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Hyper-V Writer* Yes — Can optionally be installed inside of guest VM’s. Only required for Linux guests.
Citrix XenServer 5 & 6 No Install into guest VMs (domU)
Xen Source Hypervisor No Install into guest VMs (domU)
VMWare ESXi No Install into guest VMs
VMWare Server No Install into guest VMs
VMWare Workstation No Install into guest VMs
Parallels Virtuozzo Containers Yes — Installs on physical host. Take snapshots and create backups using the MS Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Virtuozzo Writer** No
Parallels Cloud Server Windows — N/A Linux — Yes, protects all containers with one install Yes — install into Parallels HVMs running Windows

*R1Soft recommends running the latest service packs and Hyper-V hot fixes to get critical Hyper-V VSS patches from MS.
**Entire containers can be restored; however, individual files within containers cannot be restored. Additionally, the Virtuozzo VSS Writer has known issue; it can fail when the VMs are disabled.

If you’re installing R1Soft on MS Hyper-V, check out the directions for installing R1Soft on Windows in the section above.
If you’re installing R1Soft on a Linux host, check out our helpful guide here.
If you’re installing R1Soft on a Linux guest, we recommend seeking assistance through the specific distributions’ help channels.
